This remarkable and idiosyncratic route was set up by a group of volunteers called the Vanguards Rambling Club, which takes its name from their establishment in the guard’s van of a train. Using public rights of way, it runs for 66 miles from Croydon through Forest Row, Alfriston and Seaford to Newhaven, crossing the North Downs, the Weald, the Ashdown Forest, the South Downs and finishing on the Sussex Coast with spectacular views of Cuckmere Haven and the Seven Sisters. Places of interest along the way include Titsey Park, Haxted Mill, Dry Hill Camp, Winnie-the-Pooh Country, Berwick Church, Charleston Manor, Cuckmere Haven, Seaford Head and the Tide Mills abandoned village.
There is no printed book but a free and regularly updated step by step guide to the route and places of interest, as well as maps, can be downloaded from the Vanguard Way website.
