The North Downs Way is a national trail that starts at Farnham in Surrey then mostly follows the high chalk ridge through areas of outstanding natural beauty in Surrey and Kent to finish beside the white cliffs of Dover. Depending on which alternative route is chosen at its east end, it runs for either 125 miles via Folkestone or 131 miles via Canterbury. The route is divided between the high ridge and the lower shelf that is used by the Pilgrims Way, with splendid views of the rolling countryside of Surrey and Kent. There are many places of interest beside or close by, including the Watts Gallery, St Martha’s Hill, Newlands Corner, Ranmore Common, Denbies Vineyard, Box Hill, Gatton Park, Reigate Hill, Trosley Country Park, the River Medway near Rochester, Kit’s Coty House, Thurnham Castle, Wye Crown, Postling Downs, Shakespeare Cliff, Dover Castle and Canterbury Cathedral. The book provides a step by step guide to the route and places of interest, Ordnance Survey Explorer maps and colour photographs.
